Antioxidants for immunity? Aren’t they just for healthy ageing? Read on…

Antioxidants scavenge free radicals from the body cells and prevent or reduce the damage caused by cellular oxidation. They are widely studied, and their use is well understood for healthy ageing and healthy skin, but there is a clear role for them in immune system support also, as discussed here.

N- Acetyl Cysteine (NAC): the most well supported anti-oxidant for respiratory risk from viral infections in humans.  It is a “mucous modifying” agent, protecting the respiratory system and improving recovery.

Glutathione:  referred to as the “master” antioxidant, levels of this substance (naturally produced by the body), are rapidly decreased by infections, so increasing our levels by taking this as soon as an infection lands just makes sense.  It supports general immunity and lung function.

 • Quercetin: referred to interchangeably as a flavonoid, phytochemical or polyphenol, quercetin acts as a natural antihistamine and as an ionophore to zinc. It also appears in recent research to have anti-viral properties.

Green tea: Rich in polyphenols (catechin flavonoids),  green tea is a great tool to have in your winter first aid kit.  EGCG (one of the most potent polyphenols), exhibits anti-inflammatory effects.  The polyphenols activity in  green tea appears to be greater than that of vitamin C.

Proteolytic enzymes (proteases): While not an antioxidant, these are worth a mention as they are able to target cells that are dead, damaged or do not belong where they are.  They digest proteins on the cell walls of viruses, preventing them from entering human cells.  They also may help to support the mucosa in its barrier effect.  Very powerful stuff when you’re trying to fend off a virus!
